The Fort Minor moniker was first used when the rapper Mike Shinoda (rapper/producer) joined forces with producer and DJ, DJ Muggs, to form the hip-hop supergroup, The Soul Assassins. Fort Minor is a different approach to hip-hop, its lyrics based on personal feelings and emotions rather than street brawls and car chases. The name "Fort Minor" was derived from a quote by 19th century British author John Ruskin: "Do not let your schooling interfere with your education." The music is a mixture of styles that includes alternative hip-hop, rock, jazz, and electronic. In July of 2007, Shinoda announced that he was ending development of Fort Minor by the end of the year. In an August 28th interview with MTV's RapFix Live , Shinoda said: "I'm ending this thing because it's time to move on to something else," noting that the band had been going for about three years and had not released any new material. "I've been writing a lot this year because I didn't have anything to do," Shinoda said

Shinoda still does not want to be called "Fort Minor", but has said in interviews that he may start using it again when his solo album is complete. He has also mentioned that he might possibly use another alias for his solo project. When asked about what name he will be using for his solo album at an LA radio interview in 2010, Shinoda only responded "Fort Minor".
